Social Networking Services
The advent of Web 2.0 technologies are fundamentally changing the way we live, work and interact. Some of the applications that we have looked at earlier, such as del.icio.us, do allow groups to work together and facilitate collaboration. In particular, there are social networking services that have been created to draw groups of people together to share interest and knowledge. You have probably heard about Facebook, and we will look at this popular Web 2.0 application this week.
The online social network services build communities by connecting people who share interest or activities on the Web. They provide a variety of ways for users to interact including e-mail service, instant messaging, etc. More or less, these social networks do share some common characteristics:
When you sign up for a social networking service (e.g. Facebook), the first thing you have to do is to create your profile. The profile is just like your online resume that used to keep your up-to-date information.
In fact, this is the most important characteristics of a social network service which allows to add another user as a friend or a contact. For example, Facebook was initially started by Mark Zuckerberg and his friends in 2004; they use Facebook "to stay in touch with each other and to create a better understanding among college students" [1].
(III) Creating/Joining Groups
Introduction to Facebook
Groups are mostly used for discussions and events; they offer a good channel for people who share the same interest or specific topic. Utilizing "Groups" with a business context is extremely popular. For example, Sony Hong Kong use Facebook Group as a medium for engaging customers and building loyalty. Flickr, an online photo management and sharing application; also allows users to create groups and share content/discussions (we'll cover Flickr later in the program). Libraries also use Facebook Groups to communicate with, educate and attract new users. Here are a few examples:
In addition to Facebook, some of the popular social networking sites are LinkedIn, MySpace, Friendster, Meebo, Twitter, QQ, etc. For example, LinkedIn, is a tool for connecting with people specifically for career networking. In some cases, these sites have slightly different goals and target users than Facebook.
Introduction to Facebook
Facebook was started in 2004 by a Harvard student, Mark Zuckerberg; it was intended to profile his friends in school. Since then, it becomes one of the most popular social networking sites with more than 400 million active users (Source:Facebook Statistics). New tools and services have been added to Facebook over the past few years which all aim to provide connectivity along entertainment to users.
Facebook Features
Again, many social networking sites have very similar functionalities such as tagging, instant messaging, searching friends, etc. Below is a list of some interesting applications in Facebook.
Wall - the wall is just like a notice board that allows you to "update your status and share content through many different kinds of wall posts" (Source: Facebook Help Center).
Poke - there is no clear definition about poke; it can be considered as an easy way to call attention to yourself and interact with friends on Facebook.
Gift - the gift is a very popular application on Facebook. It has been commonly used by Facebook users to "exchange social capital, express affection, and build rapport" [2] between friends.
Weekly Activity
Finding out about Facebook:
You don't have to sign up for a Facebook account to complete this activity, but if you do, you will have a better understanding of how the sites works by joining it.
- Go to HKUST Learning 2.0 Group on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=135105719836783)
- Explore various features on this page (e.g. Discussion, Photos)
- What do you think about Facebook? Leave your comment on this blog post.
- If you already have a Facebook account, join the HKUST Learning 2.0 Group. You are welcome to give us feedback about the Group on the Wall. We would also like to know if the Library is going to create a Facebook account, how can we attract more students/staff to join us?
That's all for this week. If you have any questions about using Facebook, contact your group leader or Kevin. Please also feel free to visit our villagers' blogs. Some of them are very good and interesting. See you next week!

Facebook is an easy way to gather a group of people, to share what you want to share, and to discuss what you want to discuss.
Among your FB friends, you can circulate your news, your photos, your video, and your opinion within s minute.
In the meantime, you can invite your FB friends to join the groups you feel meaningful, so to gather the power to voice out your opinion to the society.
I find Facebook very handy in connecting with people you know but dispersed in different parts of the world, e.g. high school friends, college friends, family friends, etc.
The event function is very useful in reminding you on upcoming events.
Abby :
I like your pictures in the facebook.
If HKUST Library (in addition to the Leaning 2.0 Group) has a presence on Facebook, our main audience will probably be students. Some of you have already suggested good ways on how to get that started. We indeed need to be strategic about how to attack more of them and keep them. Since our Library website is chiefly in English, we probably want to use more Chinese (or both English and Chinese) in our posts on Facebook.
Please see the differences between Lingnan Lib and HKU Lib on Facebook. One Library has more or frequent posts than the other. This is another issue we also need to think about.

I find Facebook an excellent service for connecting people. The "Find Friends" feature enable users to quickly and easily find people they would like to communicate. Communication is facilitated via the share messages, photos, videos, links and events features as well as the chat function.
Facebook is indeed a handy tool for sharing whatever you want to share. And you might get virtual gifts from time to time! Use privacy settings if you don't want the content to be open to all.
I created my Facebook account several years ago but became inactive a few months later. I guess this way of connecting with others does not suit me. Recently I read a news article about a survey. 35% of respondents regretted that they have created a certain messages in Facebook. Internet is indeed very powerful.

Please delete my previous blog address and post the following new blog address for me.

Facebook is a valuable tool that can help entrepreneurs and small business owners to find customers and meet others online in a business environment.I find that some big business firms such as "Dell" has its own facebook to attract fans.
Kevin,
As a sharing tool, facebook is very powerful. However, I wonder about its security.

I created my first facebook account so that I can see the movies and pictures taken by my daughter. And it is really handy.
Regards to all you look.
Kevin,
Facebook is a very useful tool to communicate as well as to share photos, opinions with friends and relatives, but I have no time to make use of it.
Wendy.
I think that we can contact friends more frequent than before when using facebook. We can found old friends who never contact for many years in facebook.
Just learn from the newspaper today that some people being cheated lots of money by the FB friends. To protect ourshelves, don't reveal our personal details in the Facebook. Anyway, Facebook is still a very good platform to share opinions, give suggestions or collect feedback.
Facebook is really a big social network. We can share information, teaching/learning and promote service etc.
Facebook is a wonderful thing.

Facebook is quite good tool to communicate with friends.
Facebook is a popular networking tool used by our students. But most of them may not care to "friend' with the Library. Depending on how much manpower we want to invest, we can either start with a "soft" launch or to ask all Year 1 studetns to be "friends" of the Library during the freshman orientations.
I think facebook can defintely be used for event announcements and registration.
Facebook can be a powerful tool for business
Facebook indeed is a good way to connect many people but I prefer to talk with my friends face to face.
Tammy
Hi I'm late!

Maggie.
Facebook is a powerful tool for social networking. It can keep me in touch with friends in different parts of the world. However, I don't have time to use it though I have an account.
Kitman,
Actually done already.
