Photo and Image Sharing

I. Photo sharing tools
I think many of you have already had your online photo albums or digital photo albums at your computer. Many free photo-sharing websites allow you to upload, tag, organize, and share pics with your family and friends.

Here are two examples of photo-sharing tool:



Flickr; one of the largest and popular photo-sharing sites, is maintained by Yahoo.


Picasa is a Google product which allows you to upload and manage photos. Public albums are searchable through Google image searching.

This week we will look at Picasa, but the basics of photo-sharing will be the same regardless of which tool you choose.

II. Use of Photo Sharing in Libraries
Libraries can use this powerful medium to advertise and enhance library services.

Here are some examples of libraries using web albums to share photos and make use of this medium to advertise their library services, collections and get in touch with their users.

III. Activities - Picasa

Picasa have two versions: web album and desktop version.
We will look at the Picasa web album, in which you can upload , organize, tag pics and add name tags on web interface.

Activity 1: Share your album to your blog.

1. Take some photos in the Library or select a few pics of your own (travel, food, pet, etc...anything you want to share with others).

2. Activate your Picasa web-album. Go to: http://picasaweb.google.com/ , use your blogger account to log in. (Note: you may see that there are already some pics in the album if you have uploaded pics to your blog before. All the pics in your blog are added to Picasa album by default (cos they are both google software!)

3. To upload a new photo, click 'Upload', and 'Create a new album', name the album. Select Public from the Share pull-down menu (it will allow your pics searchable in Google).





4. Upload 2-3 pics to the album.

5. Locate and select photo from your computer and click 'Start upload'.

6. After the upload is completed, on right hand column, select 'Link to this album' and 'Embed slideshow'.


7. A box 'Embed slideshow Copy and paste this into your website' will appear. Copy the html codes in the yellow box.

8. Go back to your blogger and create a new post. Give a title to your post and paste all the html codes to the compose box.

9. Finally, publish the post, and a slideshow window should appear on the blog post!

Activity 2: Picasa Exploration

1. Click the explore tab in your Picasa web album.

2. Search some photos using 'hkust' as search terms. Feel free to browse through the photos.

3. (Optional). You will find many thousands of photos taken by different people in Picasa. While Picasa allows you to upload photos from others to your blogger, make sure you get the permission to reuse these photos from the author. To post a photo that you like from Picasa, on the right hand column, click post on > select blogger icon. The photo should be added as a new post and of course, you can edit the post and publish it. Last but not least, remember to give credit to the photo owner.

IV. Photo posting etiquette
When posting identifiable photos of other people, it is advisable to get the person’s permission before posting their photo in a publicly accessible place like Picasa, Flickr. Always give credit to the author!!!

Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository which makes freely-licensed educational media content (images, sound and video clips) available to everyone.
