Learning 2.0 @ HKUST Week 6 Activities:

Social Networking II: Micro-blogging

Apart from Facebook we went through last week, Micro-blogging is another popular social networking tools.

I. What is Micro-blogging?
Micro-blogging (wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro-blogging) sites, with a limit of a mini blog post with 140 characters, you can update your status with a message, image or URL, and communicating with your followers and follow the updates of people you are interesting in.

II. What tools are used?

Unlike Blogger and Wordpress, Twitter and Weibo (微博) are used for micro-blogging. As you have probably heard about Twitter, we will look at this hottest micro-blogging tool this week.

After you have registered at these micro-blogging sites, you can choose some people or organizations to follow and begin receiving their updates. And the people who follow you are called followers. Once you have new updates, your followers can immediately and automatically get your short post.

III. What are they for?
At the beginning, these micro-blogging tools are used to update "what are you doing?". But it’s now being used for much more, including sharing articles and resources; following real-time events and conferences; connecting with different group of friends; sharing and viewing pictures; following the news, weather, and road conditions; and answering reference questions, etc.

V. Activity
To help you become more comfortable with Twitter, here are a few terms to be familiar with:
Tweet: a posting on Twitter.
Followers: those following you on Twitter.
Following: those you follow on Twitter.
Reply: “@XX hello….” sending a public message to another Twitter user or responding to another user’s Tweet.
Retweet: reposting of someone else’s Tweet.

1. Register at Twitter

2. Fill in the form. You may use your blogger log-in to create your twitter account.

3. Choose some categories to follow, e.g. Books.

4. you can follow Library Journal, Google Books, etc

5. Click "Next" to finish.

6. Go to http://twitter.com/hkustlib20

8. Post your Twitter username at your blog.

9. You may see the updates of the people/ organizations that you are following.
